It was British Pacific that first introduced
the US to Air Lockers back in '85, and they remain the best
differential option for all models of Land Rover. Designed
specifically for Range Rover, Land Rover Defender, Discovery,
and all Series trucks with Rover and Salisbury type axles.
At the touch of a button, you can lock one or both axles, for maximum power
application and traction.
Virtually every other system permits some slip: if one wheel on an axle is
unloaded it is impossible to apply full power to the other on the same axle.
Air Lockers will get you through where limited slips, Detroit Lockers, or True
Tracks fail, and they are usually cheaper to boot. Air Lockers are vital for
loose sand, mud, rock crawling, snow, or extreme axle articulation.
On late model trucks with center locking differentials, the axles are still
open (only one wheel powers the axle at a time), so don't be confused into
thinking that your late model is a true 4WD because it has a center differential
lock. Lock the center differential, engage both Air Lockers, and THEN you're
armed for bear!
Air Lockers operate silently, because air makes less noise
than ratchets or clutch packs. And there's no unexpected
jerking: you control when the locker engages.
The
Air Locker differential housings are also stronger than
original equipment. The air locker compressor is a tough
and tested unit, capable of sustained operation, and can
be used to inflate tires that were aired down for better
loose surface traction.
To fit your Land Rover with Air Lockers, you need (A) the compressor, and (B)
the locking differential units (one per axle). With a Series truck, or when
using 4:70 or 4:11 ring & pinions in late models (which we recommend doing
at the same time, especially if you have larger than stock tires), you will
need a ring gear spacer. When fitting 4:70's or 4:11's to Discoverys with 'Rotoflex'
couplings, a Range Rover style drive shaft and drive flange will be required,
also available through BP. When fitting lockers to late models, only the compressor
and differential(s) are required. If you have any questions, no one in the
US has more experience with these systems than we do!

And from one of our customers:

"Greetings, Rover enthusiasts! My name
is Huston, and I own a 1993 Defender 110 with a Salisbury
rear end. I am a member of Southern California Land Rover
group. In preparation for the 2007 'Rover Rendezvous' near
Death Valley I installed an ARB locker and compressor. What
a huge difference in traction. No spinning tires or revving
engine that can break parts. I have to thank British Pacific
for providing all the parts fast, next day usually and at
great prices. Plenty of technical advice from decades of
experience and super nice, patient guys always there to help.
As a novice tinkerer British Pacific really makes it fun
to own a Land Rover. I would like to thank everybody at British
Pacific for officially sponsoring SCLR and providing a great
source for parts and advice. Thanks guys and keep up the
great work!"
